CHAPTER 10

Gabe stepped forward and opened the once white painted door. Flakes had fallen off onto the floor, the bare wood discernibly rotten beneath it. “I’ll go first. I don’t want you to be surprised by someone.” He also wanted to make sure everything was clear. No obvious tricks of the trade. The opaque glass window was set with embedded wires to prevent breakage in case of attack but was also designed for no visibility.

Stainless steel equipment gleamed dully beneath their coating of dust. Broken cabinets that once housed equipment, now only held cobwebs and a few random tools scattered by trespassers and curiosity seekers. Asylums were popular with the ghost-hunting crowd. There were so many shows dedicated to sniffing out specters and dredging up things best left undisturbed.

What would they do if they ever came across something real and not a fabric of their imagination?

An examination table sat in the center of the room, the leather straps dangling down like memories of heinous acts long since past.

What kind of surgeries happened here?

From his research, he could guess. The mental health standards during the time Greystone was open were barbaric. Lobotomies, hardcore shock treatment... the works. The pictures he’d looked at online sent chills down his spine. Patients abandoned in rooms to die, still others locked into bathtubs with tarps to secure them in the freezing cold water. Rooms that deprived the criminally insane of all light and sound. It defied reason, the things that went on here.

Gabe scrutinized Laurel as she drew in on herself. She stood stock still, the blood draining from her face leaving her washed out and without color. The air around her vibrated and disembodied voices echoed through the open space.

Surely she hadn’t had time to put an audio system in place?

He had been right behind her in the hallway. With the trauma of her accident, he doubted she would come here on her own to tamper with the site.

No.

This was something else.

He yanked his hand out of her grip and stumbled backward. Laurel moaned and her hands clenched into fists. He blinked and searched the room for Saul. If he’d been behind them, he’d most likely stepped out of the room in disgust at watching him hold Laurel’s hand like some kind of idiot.

Fine.

Gabe would play her game until he had enough rope to hang her with.

“Laurel?”

She didn’t answer, her gaze locked on something ahead of her that only she could see.

Gabe stepped closer but hesitated to touch her. She appeared fragile enough to break. He gingerly reached out and laid his hand on her forehead. She was frigid. Freezing. He drew his hand back with an intake of breath and gritted his teeth.

This was odd.

He walked around her and scanned the walls and floors.

Nothing.

No wires, no air drafts.

He wasn’t prepared for this. Gabe had seen no documentation of her lapsing into any kind of fugue state, and he’d researched the hell out of this woman. The injury from the last case made it imperative to find out all he could about his new “partner” on this case.
